Ocean Boys hits Boavista 6-1

YESTERDAY at the Oghara Stadium, Ocean Boys of Brass proved too good for Portuguese side, Boavista FC, beating the Europeans by a whopping 6-1 in one of the international friendly matches lined up for the visitors.
Five of Ocean Boy's goals were scored in the first half, with Bola Lekan netting a hat trick in the encounter. Lekan opened his account in the 10th minute and two minutes later he got another goal against the bemused Portuguese team. He completed his mission in the 22nd minute when he scored his club's fifth goal. But before then, Ifeanyi Ede had gotten into the act with the third goal in the 16th minute, with Onyekwere Nwosu making it fourth in the 20th minute.
Boavista came out stronger in the second half and reduced the tally in the 76th minute through Joad Nou. But Pere Kabokweme restored the five-goal advantage in the 85th minute to crown a surprise victory for the 2006 Globacom Premier League champion.
Speaking after the encounter, officials of Boavista attributed their heavy defeat to inclement weather, saying they played better in the second half when the sun had gone down. They also disclosed that they were trying to build a new team after their demotion to the Portuguese League Division last season.
Bayelsa, Boavista sign MoU
By Adeyinka Adedipe
OFFICIALS of the visiting Portuguese football club, Boavista, and the government of Bayelsa State yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at forging a fruitful relationship between the club and the state.
Among the terms of the agreement, according to the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Peremobowei Ebibe, are the opportunities it would afford the government to exchange players and coaches from its clubs with that of Boavista and the grooming of Bayelsa youths by the club.
Ebibe disclosed at a reception for the club that the government was looking forward to the time Bayelsa players would be playing for the Portuguese team, adding that the MoU has opened an avenue for useful engagements for Bayelsa youths. He said: "We will key into the opportunity of the MoU for the development of our youths, and we look forward to a fruitful relationship."
In his reaction to the agreement, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board member, Peter Singabele, who is also an official of the Bayelsa State Government, saw the agreement as a new window of opportunity for the state. He said the state's youth development and empowerment programme would get more impetus given the enthusiasm shown by both parties to the agreement.
Chairman of Ocean Boys of Brass, whose team is expected to benefit from the MoU, Rumson Bariobote, described the project as a tool that would make Niger Delta youths to believe in themselves and look up to footballers as role model.
According to him, Boavista's visit to Nigeria has exposed Ocean Boys' players to the international audience and the club is looking forward to reaping from the MoU between Bayelsa State and the Portuguese club.
